3y - 2 = y + 4

What is the value of y? I got 3 from a calculator but I'm having trouble understanding why. Could anyone briefly explain how you get this answer?

My attempt is:
3y - 2 = y + 4
+2 +2
3y = y + 6
...and here is where I get stuck. If you divide, the y value goes away. But you cannot subtract because there is nothing to subtract from... Could someone help explain my next step and/or where I am going wrong?

Well.. There's 3y-2=y+4 right?
Add 2 and you get 3y=y+6
Minus y- you get 2y=6
Divide it at 2 and you get y=3.
Sorry for the explanation but I'm from another country and this is the best I can
