a plumber has a very long piece of pipe is used to run the water parallel to a major place the pipe is cut into two sections 1 section of pipe is 12 feet shorter than the other three fourths of the pipe is 120 feet how long is the longer piece of pipe? can you help me set up an algebraic equation?

Let x = the shorter piece and Let y = the longer piece.

(3/4)x = 120

x = 120 / (3/4)

x = 120 * (4/3 = 480/3) = 160 feet

y = 160 + 12
