by dividing 10 by 8 and that is 1 and remainder 2 so the 1 whole is added to the seven and the 2 becomes 2/8 and those two become 7 and 2/8

8 can go into 10 once, with 2 left over. so it would be 1 2/8, but we simplify to get 1 1/4. you add 7+1 1/4 to get 8 1/4. Hope this helps:)
