How does a polyatomic anion differ from a monatomic anion?

A monatomic ion contains only one atom, examples:
Na +, Cl-, Al3 +, N3-, Fe2 +

A polyatomic ion contains more than one atom, examples:
ClO4 -, OH-, NH4+
