Answers:

  1. probability = 11/19
  2. probability = 33/38

===================================================

Explanations:

  1. There are 5+9+16+8 = 38 balloons and 16 of them are yellow. So 38-16 = 22 are not yellow. This leads to 22/38 = 11/19 being the probability of picking something that isn't yellow.
  2. Same idea as problem 1. This time we don't want red. There are 5 red so there are 38-5 = 33 non-red balloons. We end up with the answer 33/38

For either problem, you could find the decimal form, but I think the fraction form is better (since it's exact instead of approximate).
