The answer would end up being A. 5/8 because if you subtract 1/4 from 7/8 you would have to multiply the 1/4 by 2 to give you 2/8 so it can be subtracted from 7/8 because they have to have the same denominator and then you end up with a total of 5/8 gas was used for the trip

The answer is A.5/8.
Why?
Multiply 1/4 with 2/2 to get the same denominator as 7/8, 8. That will yield 2/8.Then, simply subtract 2/8 from 7/8 (7/8 - 2/8), and that equals 5/8.
Hope this helps!
