How did the practice of imperialism push Europe toward World War I?

Competition over land led to larger military force and alliances.

Imperialism caused European countries to compete for land, resources, and markets. To protect your new empire, a country needed a large military and/or alliances to defend the empire. The alliance system and large military forces are to blame for the war becoming a world war.
