Amniocentesis
The form of technology the doctor is likely to have used is amniocentesis. Amniocentesis is a procedure that is carried out during pregnancy to check whether a baby has a chromosomal, genetic condition or other disorder such as down’s syndrome. A sample of the fluid inside the uterus which surrounds the baby is used for this procedure. Amniocentesis is recommended during pregnancy if one or both parent of a growing fetus are carriers of a genetic disorder such as sickle cell anaemia that could be passed on to the baby.
