Tickets for admission to a play are $3 for children and $5 for adults. During one performance they collected $3,000 from the sale of 720 tickets. How many of each teckets did they sell?

We will use x to represent children’s tickets and y to represent adults. The first equation will be x+y=720. The amount of tickets that were sold have to equal x and y added together. The second equation will be 3x+5y=3,000.
You can solve this using the process of elimination or by using the matrix on a graphing calculator.

Using the matrix, you’ll get x=300 and y=420. They sold 300 children’s tickets and 420 adults.
