In the early 1990s, they started having nationalist tendencies and wanted to completely separate themselves from the Soviet Union, since they weren't their member but were heavily controlled by them. They introduced new laws which stated that they would no longer be a communist country, that the communist party would be tried for crimes, and that they would peacefully split into two countries, Czech Republic and Slovakia, which happened in 1993.
