How were the wars in korea and vietnam connected to the cold war between the united states and russia

The wars in korea and vietnam were basically a 'proxy war', for the two sides did not fight each other directly (as seen in a hot war) but fought for a side/supplied the side they support in hope that they might win) In both cases, the Russians supported the North (Communist regimes) while the US supported the south (non-communist governments)
