You start with the initial amount of rain (-11) and then work through the problem. The first part has you adding 1/2 seven times so you end up with -11 + 1/2(7) = -7.5. However it then drops 2 1/4 for three months so you do -7.5 - 2 1/4(3) = -14 1/4
