Average speed = 60 mph

Explanation:

First stretch was for 5 hours (5pm - 12noon) at 50 mph
So distance traveled = 50 mph x 5 hours = 250 miles

Second stretch was again for 5 hours at 70 mph
Distance traveled = 70mph x 5 = 350 miles

Total distance traveled = 250 + 350 = 600 miles

Total time taken = 5 + 5 = 10 hours

Average speed = 600/10 = 60 mph
