The proton identifies an atom as that of a particular element. The atomic number is equal to the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.

Proton is the subatomic particle which identify the elements identity.

Proton decides the atomic number of an element because

atomic number = number of protons in the element.

if the number of proton change, it changes the identity of element since each element has specific atomic number. two different elements can not have same atomic numbers. the number of protons and number of electrons in an element are equal.
