I believe that the transcription of new messenger RNA is a function of steroid hormones.
Steroid hormones are secreted by the testes, which produce testosterone, ovaries which produce estrogen, and the adrenal cortex which produce steroid hormones cortisol and aldosterone. Free steroids enter the cell cytoplasm and interact with their receptor. After binding with ligand, steroid receptors often form dimers. In the nucleus the complex act as a transcription factor, augmenting or suppressing transcription of particular gene by its action on DNA.
