You are solving the equation:

| x + 2 | = 6

If x+2>0, then

x + 2 = 6
x = -4

If x+2 < 0, then
-(x+2) = 6
-x -2 = 6
-x = 8
x = -8

Therefore, there are two solutions, x = 4 and -8

The solution set is {-8,4}
