ANSWER: The amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web. Why are there usually few organisms at the top of an energy pyramid? Because so much energy is lost from one level to the next level up, the energy available at the top level can support few organisms.

The organisms that eat the producers are the primary consumers. They tend to be small in size and there are many of them. ... Because of this inefficiency, there is only enough food for a few top level consumers, but there is lots of food for herbivores lower down on the food chain.
