The skeletal anatomy of proconsul indicates that it can be classified as an Ape. Proconsul is an extinct genus of primate that lived approximately 23 million years ago during the Miocene epoch period. Unlike living apes, Proconsul was a quadruped, with several features reflecting this adaptation, including; forelimbs and hind limbs of the same approximate length, the lower part of the spine is long and flexible for quadrupedal movement and also the hands were used for palm-down walking as in living monkeys.
