The Answer is C: 14 - 4x + 9y

Simplify the following:
6 - 4 (x + 1 - (y + 3)) + 5 y

-(y + 3) = -y - 3:
6 - 4 (x + 1 + -y - 3) + 5 y

Grouping like terms, x + 1 - 3 - y = -y + x + (1 - 3):
6 - 4 (-y + x + (1 - 3)) + 5 y

1 - 3 = -2:
6 - 4 (-y + x + -2) + 5 y

-4 (-2 + x - y) = 8 - 4 x + 4 y:
6 + 8 - 4 x + 4 y + 5 y

Add like terms. 6 + 8 = 14:
14 - 4 x + 4 y + 5 y

4 y + 5 y = 9 y:

Answer: 14 - 4 x + 9 y
