Rivers also gave factories a place to dump waste in the 1800s and early 1900s (before the environmental effects were known). The proximity to shipping ports made it easy for goods to be produced and then brought to harbors where they could be shipped overseas.

the northeast didn't have fertile land for farming while the south did. it wouldn't have been as efficient to set up factories on valuable farming land, but in the north that was not an issue. in addition it was easy to ship both raw materials and finished products because of the bodies of water nearby.
