A leaf is used to identify a tree as an ash. What are the characteristics of the leaf? Find “ash” on the key on the right and work backward to find the characteristics.

Answer: Option 3(C)-broad leaf, compound leaf, leaves attached at many points, leaf bases attached opposite each other on branch.

Ash trees have quite distinct leaves because they have compound leaves. This means that the leaf is actually a group of small leaflets attached to the stalk. While this is not unique, we have that the ash tree has leaflets opposite each other (usually 5 to 9 leaflets including the one at the top of the leaf) which is quite rare.
