8x - 34 and 5x + 2 are corresponding angles and, by the Corresponding Angles Theorem, are congruent.

8x - 34 = 5x + 2
8x - 34 + 34 = 5x = 2 + 34
8x = 5x + 36
8x - 5x = 5x + 36 - 5x
3x = 36
3x/3 = 36/3
x = 12
