"Witness to the Tragedy" focuses on what took place just after Hurricane Katrina. It looks back on the devastation that occurred, noting how it had more ongoing damage than any other national devastation that the author had ever reported on. The photos in the article show that after the hurricane was over, people struggled from exhaustion, dehydration, and displacement. The buildings remained flooded and damaged for a long time.

"Hope Survives in Search for Katrina's Missing" focuses on the later end of Katrina's aftermath. For months after the hurricane, people were still looking for their loved ones. This story captures the joy of people who were able to find those who they thought had died months before. Even though many people's lives were lost in the hurricane, the story sheds a positive light on the amount of survivors.

Though written from different viewpoints at different time periods, these articles both portray the hope that arose from Hurricane Katrina due to people who were willing to help, and the safety those people were able to bring to survivors.
