the sum of two numbera is 122. the second number is 18 less than three times the first number. find the numbers. help please!

so you can write two equations
x + y = 122
y = 3*x - 18
by substitution:
x + (3x - 18) = 122
now you simplify:
4x - 18 = 122
4x = 140
x = 35
to find y, you can use the first equation
35 + y = 122
y = 87
