These workers were called the Lowell Mill Girls and at one point in time there was over eight thousand female workers in such factories. This meant that nearly three quarters of the factory staff consisted of females which was a vast majority of workers in the workforce. They weren't paid the same but even the smaller wages helped many get economic independence.
