The answer is B, the particles moves up and down over small areas. A transverse wave like the one shown above is a wave in which particles of the medium move in a direction parallel to the direction that the wave moves. It forms maximum points (crests) and minimum points (troughs) such that the particles continuously oscillates causing transmission of energy.
