Why were education reforms needed in the mid 1800s

The education reformation was aimed to getting more kids educated. Books like Huckleberry Finn were based on times where getting a formal education was very rare. Working moved from fields and into the factories which required the education to be more prominent. They wanted equal education for all, improve schools, and require students to attend. To do this, they opened more schools, enrolled more students, motivated both teachers and students, bettered the curriculum, admitted women into some colleges, extended the school year, increased teacher's salaries, introduced new teaching methods, and enriched the curriculum. This upped the literacy rate, created major reforms of all kinds, and improved our entire education system all around.
