The recurring themes of the Djenné sculptures are the squatting position of the human figures, the serpent, wrapped around itself, and the zigzag-shaped decorative motifs over the characters.

The serpent takes us back to its mythical origin, and speaks of a girl who was buried alive in honor of the sacred python.
