It is called selective attention. Selective attention is essential for an individual to focus on a certain stimulus instead of looking at the whole picture. This ability enables our mind to restrict other information to avoid sensory overload. Selective attention is also believed to filtering out those "unimportant" stimuli so we can focus on what is relevant.
