The role of philosophy in medieval thought was used to spread ideas. Medieval philosophy included religious ideas, math, and natural science. Early church leaders could affect the philosophical ideas of this age because most people were not literate and thus the control was in the hands of educated people. Even though power was largely in the hands of the Church, there was still philosophy being spread that was contrary to the Church. During this time period the Church would depose and excommunicate philosophers who opposed their views and philosophy of the world. To avoid persecution, early philosophers used various writing styles to conceal their ideas and continue promoting their ideas without facing resistance from the Church.
