The people that are electing the president are called the electors. These electors consist of members of house representatives and the senators. Currently , The Electoral College is made up of 538 electors. The votes from these 538 electors are the one that matters the most in the election.

Even if the majority of the people cast their ballots to one candidate, their candidate wouldn't be elected as their president if they fail to obtain the support from the majority of these electors.

When American voters cast their ballots , they're giving a demand for the electors to vote on their behalf. But, the constitution did not necessarily require the electors to follow the popular vote.
