"For fourteen years I have placed my confidence in the citizens of Massachusetts--and they have generously responded by placing their confidence in me."

JFK is a known politician who seems to be trusted throughout more than a decade. He has achieved some level of success that is respectable at least and that's where his respect comes from. JFK past as a successful and trusted politician gives him the authority needed because he is respected by the people.
