it's better to put it exactly how i wrote it to ensure you'll get it right ( -4 goes first then 2).

5w^2 + 10w - 40 = 0
Divide by 5 through ...
w^2 + 2w - 8 = 0
(w+4)(w-2) = 0
w = -4 or w = 2
