Henry VII wanted to divorce his wife but knew that divorce wasn't allowed in the Catholic Church, so he started the church is England.

Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church in Rome and closed the monasteries. To help him in his struggle with the Catholic Church, Henry needed help from Protestants. He split away from Rome because he wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn.
