x^2 +6x -5 = 0
x^2 +6x = 5 . . . . . add 5
x^2 +6x +9 = 14 . . . add 9
(x +3)^2 = 14 . . . . . . write left side as square
x +3 = ±√14 . . . . . . . take the square root
x = -3 ±√14 . . . . . . . subtract 3
