Light collecting is one important property. This is determined by the diameter of the aperture and primary lens of the astronomical detector. The pupil of the eye is analogical to the aperture of the detector.

Another property is the formation of an image. Astronomical detectors have photosensors that convert the photons of light to electrical energy. This is analogical to the eye retina (rods and cones).
