Answer:

39/36, or 1 3/36 = 1 1/12 yards of fabric total

Explanation:

There are 3 feet in a yard. There are also 12 inches in a foot; this means there are 3(12) = 36 inches in a yard.

Using this common denominator for the blue diamonds fabric, we know that it takes 9 fours to make 36; this means we use 9(1) on the top for 9. This gives us 9/36.

Using the common denominator of 36 for the yellow bonnets fabric, we know that it takes 6 sixes to make 36; this means we use 6(5) on the top for 30. This gives us 30/36.

Together this gives us 9/36+30/36 = 39/36. 36 will go into 39 one time, for our whole number of 1; the remainder of 3 goes above 36, for

1 3/36.

We can simplify 3/36 by dividing the numerator and denominator by 3; this gives us 1 1/12.

There are 36 inches in a yard, so that is the denominator being asked for.

1/4 yard = 9/36 yards
5/6 yard = 30/36 yards
