African American women and men encountered diverse experiences of enslavement. Male slaves outnumbered female and were often used for more laborious work in the fields. Females were were often caretakers, cooks, and servants in the house. Occupational hazards were significantly higher for the men. While the women could form an more established relationship with the slave owner family so their health may had been better watched and taken care of.
