here is the full excerpt:

Juan, Jane, and Judy are in the same class. Juan recently came to this country from Central America. Jane and Judy’s families have been here for generations. Juan studies hard and wants to go to college so he can get an important job, which would also please his family. Jane’s family does not value education, and all she wants to do is quit school at the end of the year and get a job. She says this will provide a better place to live. Jane wants some stability in her life, as her family fights a lot. Judy also wants to go to college so she can join a sorority and continue her social life. She hopes to find her true love at college and get married

.I believe the answer is Self-esteem/ego
In this hierarchy of needs, an individual tend to desire both a sense of achievements in his/her life and a sense of belonging/becoming valuable member of a group, which lead Judy to make an Effort in both her studis and sorority.
