When was CODIS created to help identify criminals?

CODIS ans the Combined DNA index system, it is the FBI's program that supports the criminal justice DNA databases and the software used for running these databases. The software uses both forensic science and computer technology. There are multiple levels of information in CODIS where DNA profiles are stored. The three levels include Local, State and National. The database includes information on missing persons, forensic samples and data pf missing persons. Due to reasons of privacy, it doesn't contain any personal information. It was created ion 1990 and was formalized by the DNA Identification Act of 1994.

In 1994, Congress passed the DNA Identification Act which authorized the FBI to create a national DNA database of convicted offenders as well as separate databases for missing persons and forensic samples collected from crime scenes.
