racism exists today in the form of abuse by government officials and internalized generational ideas that many people still have about people of color. for example, many people of color experience racial profiling by police officers where just because of their skin color, officers will automatically assume that a person has done something wrong and follow/arrest/watch them. They also treat people of color more violently than any white person because there are still ideas out there that people of color are more dangerous than others. Within the general population racism is present in the way that people try to ignore many issues that people of color face and play it off as “using the race card”. it’s common knowledge that in average black people are incarcerated at higher rates than white people, and receive worse punishments. for example, if two men commit the same crime, one being white and the other a person of color, the white man is more likely to get off with less time than the other man.
