the ocean absorbs heat which makes it warmer during the winter and colder during the summer

Hey there, they affect the climate because, Water heats and cools more slowly than land. So, in the summer, the coastal regions will stay cooler! In the winter it will stay warmer. Then a moderate climate with a smaller temperature range is created.
