Most of the ATP required for cellular activities is produced in the Mitochondria by a process called cellular respiration. During respiration nutrients (fats, lipids and carbohydrates) are broken down and oxygen acts a s a proton acceptor in the electron transport chain thus resulting to generation of energy in form of ATP.
