et x be the number of dimes.
Then there is 0.1x + 0.05(x+27) cents in the jar, so
0.1x + 0.05(x+27) = 3.30
Distributing,
0.1x + 0.05x + 1.35 = 3.30
0.15x = 1.95
x = 13
There are 13 dimes, and thus, 40 nickels in the jar.
