The cost for operating a television varies directly as the number of hours that it is in operation. If it costs $18.00 to operate a standard-size color TV continuously for 30 days, how much would it cost to operate the TV for 9 days and 16 hours?

Solution:

we are given that

The cost for operating a television varies directly as the number of hours that it is in operation.

It costs $18.00 to operate a standard-size color TV continuously for 30 days.

we have been asked to find how much would it cost to operate the TV for 9 days and 16 hours?

First convert 9 days and 16 hours in days.

9 days and 16 hours
=9+(16)/(24)=9+ (2)/(3)=(29)/(3)days.

Since it cost $18.00 for 30 days.

So it will cost
(18)/(30)= (9)/(15)=(3)/(5) $ for one day.

So for
(29)/(3)days. it will cost
(3)/(5)*(29)/(3)=(29)/(5)=5.8 $

Hence the required cost is $5.8
