ratio 3:5:9....added = 17......the largest share will then get 9/17 of the total amount. The largest share will get 54.
So 9/17 of the total money is 54...
9/17x = 54
x = 54 / (9/17)
x = 54 * 17/9
x = 102.....so the total amount of money is 102

the smallest share gets : 3/17 * 102 = 18 <===
the middle share gets : 5/17 * 102 = 30
the largest share gets : 9/17 * 102 = 54

3:5:9

The largest share (9) is $54

Divide 54 with 9

54/9 = 6

a share of (1) = 6

Multiply 6 with 3 (smallest share)

6 x 3 = 18

18 is your answer

hope this helps
