In order to collect and examine cervical cells for any abnormalities, the vagina is held open with a speculum, and a few cells are gently swabbed or flushed from the cervix. The cervix may be affected by some disease causing infections which are diagnosed by examining the cells of the cervix by swabbing or flushing the cervix.

A pap smear test is perform to collect and examine cervical cells for any abnormalities, the vagina is held open with a speculum that is lubricated and the client must relax for easier insertion of vaginal speculum and reduce patient discomfort. Then a few cells are gently brushed or swabbed from the cervix and this will undergo laboratory examination. The procedure is done for early detection of cervical cancer cells.
