The nurse should put the client at prone position a couple of times in a day for about 20 minutes to prevent hip flexion contracture. The client can be position in supine but the stump must be elevated for the first 24 hours by uplifting the foot of the bed instead of using pillow. The elevation of residual limb after surgery helps lessen edema and pain by increasing venous return and decreasing venous pooling at the distal portion of the extremity.

The nurse should position the client at a prone position every 3 to 4 hours for 20 to 30 minutes periods. This should be done periodically. Arterial insufficiency is any condition that slows or stops the flow of blood through your arteries. Arteries are blood vessels that circulate blood from the heart to other parts of the body.
