Religious scriptures oftentimes teach that in the afterlife individuals will be rewarded or punished based on the actions taken during their life. For the most part altruistic actions are rewarded in the afterlife and actions detrimental to other people are punished in the afterlife. Therefore religions help to promote progressive reforms by influencing people to help each other and take actions that benefit society as a whole. Social morality states that all people are interconnected and we our actions impact each other. This encourages people to help each other since they themselves want to be helped. This helps to promote progressive reforms by influencing people to try to institutionalize their morality to encourage widespread adaption.

Religions and social morality promotes progessive reforms by creating a certain standard of right and wrong that could be accepted by society.
For example, there was a time in human society when we won't feel any remorse in challenging someone we don't like into a duel and killed him/her.
Religions and social morality view this as a 'wrong behavior' and as time goes by almost all poeple in society believe the act of killing in anyway is considered as wron (this include as a progressive phenomenon in soicety)
