u cannot add or subtract fractions unless they have the same denominator

5/3 + 1/5....common denominator of 3 and 5 is 15...so convert ur fractions so they have a denominator of 15

25/15 + 3/15 = 28/15....add the numerators...the denominator stays 15

We need to find a common denominator(bottom number of fraction)

5/3 = 25/15 (multiply both top and bottom by 5)
1/5 = 3/15 (multiply both top and bottom by 3)

Now since the denominator is the same we can add to get 25/15 + 3/15 = 28/15
